چکیده

This paper criticizes the use of multiple regression (MR) in the fields of comparative social policy and political economy and proposes alternative methods of numerical analysis. The limitations of MR in its characteristic guise as a means of hypothesis-testing are well known. The emphasis here is on the specific difficulties of applying MR to the problem of explaining diverse outcomes across a limited range of country cases. Two principal conclusions will emerge. First, even though technical means are available to deal with many of the limitations of MR, these solutions are either unconvincing or else require such advanced technical skills that they offer questionable returns on scholarly investment. Second, dissatisfaction with MR does not necessarily mandate radical alternatives or abandonment of numerical methods altogether. ‘‘Low-tech’’ forms of analysis (tabular and graphical methods) and multivariate statistical techniques other than MR (such as factor analysis) constitute viable and useful alternatives. The comparative study of welfare states is a good example of the characteristic methodological polarization that afflicts the social sciences. Historians and social policy analysts with an intrinsic interest in welfare states engage in descriptive and prescriptive studies, while at the other extreme are ‘‘hard-nosed’’ social scientists who regard the welfare state essentially as a

Limits of and Alternatives to Multiple Regression in Macro- Comparative Research1

This paper offers criticisms of, and alternatives to, the use of multiple regression in crossnational comparisons of welfare states and comparative political economy generally. To set the context for this discussion, it is worth remembering that there was once quite a clear divide between descriptive and prescriptive studies by historians or social policy analysts—the people who knew what they ...

Using Regression based Control Limits and Probability Mixture Models for Monitoring Customer Behavior

In order to achieve the maximum flexibility in adaptation to ever changing customer’s expectations in customer relationship management, appropriate measures of customer behavior should be continually monitored. To this end, control charts adjusted for buyer’s/visitor’s prior intention to repurchase or visit again are suitable means taking into account the heterogeneity across customers. In the ...

Extensions of ELECTRE-I and TOPSIS methods for group decision-making under complex Pythagorean fuzzy environment

Multi-criteria group decision-making is a process in which decision makers assess the performance of alternatives on the basis of conflicting criteria to opt the most worthy alternative as solution. TOPSIS and ELECTRE are effective and commonly used methods to solve multiple criteria decision-making problems. The aim of this study is to propose two new models, namely, complex Pythagorean fuzzy ...

A comparative QSAR analysis, molecular docking and PLIF studies of some N-arylphenyl-2,2-dichloroacetamide analogues as anticancer agents

Dichloroacetate (DCA) is a simple and small anticancer drug that arouses the activity of the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) through inhibition of the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDK1-4). DCA can selectively promote mitochondria-regulated apoptosis, depolarizing the hyperpolarized inner mitochondrial membrane potential to normal levels, inhibit tumor growth and reduce proliferati...
